Percentage Change & CAGR
Work out the percentage increase or decrease between two numbers, or the compound annual growth rate (CAGR) across several periods.
Percentage change
Increase
+28.00%
Difference
+350
Formula: (new − old) ÷ |old| × 100. Going back from 1,600 to 1,250 would be -21.88% — percentage changes aren't symmetric.
Compound growth (CAGR)
Growth per year
13.09%
Total change
+85.00%
Formula: (end ÷ start)1 / periods − 1. Growing 13.09% every year for 5 years turns 100,000 into 185,000.
How to use the Percentage Change & CAGR
- 1For percentage change, enter the old and new value.
- 2For CAGR, enter the start value, end value and number of periods.
- 3Read the result and the formula used.
Frequently asked questions
How do you calculate percentage change?
(New − Old) ÷ |Old| × 100. Going from 80 to 100 is a 25% increase.
What is CAGR?
Compound annual growth rate: the constant rate per period that turns the starting value into the ending value. Formula: (End ÷ Start)^(1 ÷ periods) − 1.
Why isn't a 50% drop undone by a 50% gain?
Percentages apply to different bases. 100 falls 50% to 50, and 50 must then rise 100% to get back to 100.
